The advertiser can exclude impressions that originate from specific internet providers. A database of several thousand providers is available for this purpose. Additionally, devices connected to the internet via a virtual private network (VPN) can be filtered.
We recommend that all advertisers filter VPN connections and select the default option Deny VPN connections.

Benefits of Filtering by Internet Provider
VPN connections allow users to establish a secure and tamper-proof connection to the internet. By connecting to the internet through a VPN, the regular internet connection is reduced to the function of an extension cable. The actual internet access becomes undefined.
By filtering the internet provider and excluding virtual private networks, the advertiser can ensure that the advertised page is viewed by users who are actually located in the desired country (see geo-targeting).
Most advertisers target an audience that is connected to the internet via an end-customer provider rather than a VPN connection. If you want to prevent visitors to your website from using a virtual private network, enable the Deny VPN connections filter.
What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?
VPN stands for virtual private network, in which the user's data on the internet is protected and anonymized. With a VPN connection, your data is encrypted before it reaches the internet.
Unlike a regular internet connection, the encrypted data is first sent to a VPN provider's server. This server simultaneously assigns a new anonymous internet address to the user. Once this is done, a connection to the outside internet is established. Generally, the following process applies:
- User sends data to the VPN.
- Data is encrypted.
- Data is transmitted to the VPN server.
- A foreign IP address is assigned.
- Connection to the internet is established.
Advantages and Disadvantages of a Virtual Private Network
Advantages of a VPN
A VPN connection provides perceived anonymity, as the data is encoded and the user cannot be easily identified due to the foreign IP address. Since the user can connect via VPN servers in different countries, the user's location is harder to determine. This provides additional anonymity, but at the same time allows the user to fake their country of origin by selecting a specific server location.
Disadvantages of a VPN
A VPN connection typically offers significantly reduced connection speed. The effective bandwidth of the end-customer provider is limited, as the data being sent must first be encrypted and routed through the VPN server.
VPN providers are often so anonymous that users should be cautious about who they entrust their (encrypted) data to. Not every VPN provider is reputable, and careful research should be a top priority when choosing a provider.
It should be noted that users of a VPN network can only use eBesucher services to a limited extent or not at all. Most advertisers do not want visitors who are connected via a VPN for the reasons mentioned above. Therefore, only a few pages can be visited through the surfbar, and pay-to-click ads are generally not served to VPN users.
