Online banking is a collective term for different methods, which allow a customer to make financial transactions - regardless of the opening hours of a branch bank. Today, about 50% of the German population use online banking (compared to 8% in 1998). The first steps towards this development have already been made in 1980, when the the German Federal Post Office allowed selected customers via interactive videotext (also known as BTX, a predecessor of the internet which is strongly reminiscent of the Teletext), to make their payments online.
